There were not enough aircraft to fly. Other crews' aircraft had been confiscated on Saipan. The 504th began operations with less than 30 airplanes. We needed at least 45 B-29s and crews. Our camp site was located about a mile south of the airfield on the island's west side. The camp was ideally situated on a plateau adjacent to a steep cliff which dropped off to the Pacific Ocean. Tinian's Hilo and Earle points jutted out to sea on either side of our camp area. Our camp site was one of the finest spots on the beau- Page 25 tiful island.
We tried everything during the flight to get rid of the vibration. We were forced to set down in Albuquerque, New Mexico, during a cold and dark night. This was an overnight stop. We quickly realized that tropical uniforms were not the most comfortable attire for New Mexico in the freezing winter time. Ground crews at Albuquerque tried to find the trouble. They couldn't locate the problem. The next morning we took off for Mather Field, our APOE (Air Port of Embarkation) located near Sacramento.
He was the Army Air Force's equivalent of the army's Gen. George Patton. Army Air Force commander Gen. Henry "Hap" Arnold, commanded the 20th Air Force from his Pentagon headquarters in Washington, DC. This organization was truly a strategic air force. It was formed to assure that the B-29s, with their special capabilities, were used for strategic bombing and not subject to service by local commanders who might be tempted to use them for day-to-day tactical bombing missions. Separated from the commands of the two Pacific War Area commanders, Admiral Nimitz and General MacArthur, its operational role was unique.
